4 DOOR 5 DOOR

INNOVATIVE, SPACIOUS AND DISTINCTIVE ... THE LIANA 4-DOOR SEDAN

The 4-door 1.6 litre Liana sedan, along with its 5-door hatchback sibling, utilises all of Suzuki’s renowned expertise in compact vehicle design, bringing to the C-segment the same advantages that have made Suzuki’s smaller cars such as Wagon R+ and Ignis, a resounding success.

Spacious, well equipped, stylish and distinctive, the Liana sedan offers very competitive levels of performance, safety and fuel economy, plus minimal running costs.

It has rapidly built a strong following as its value-for-money, family car credentials have become more widely recognised, an appeal that received a major boost in early 2004 with a series of major revisions, including a completely revamped interior.

The Liana Sedan has also become famous for its starring role in BBC Top Gear’s ‘star in a reasonably priced car’ slot, in which celebrities race against the clock around the demanding Top Gear track. Just one car has been used throughout the four series of the programme in which it has clocked up several thousand punishing miles. Complete with bucket seats and roll cage, it has put big smiles on some very famous faces.

Two 1.6 litre sedans ... the GL and GLX

There are two Liana sedan models available – the GL and GLX – and both are powered by an identical, latest generation 1.6 litre, DOHC, 16-valve all-alloy engine developing
104.6 bhp at 5,500 rpm and 106.1 lb.ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. On the road, those figures translate into a top speed of 105.6 mph, a combined fuel consumption of 40.9 mpg and CO2 emissions of just 169 g/km.

The exceptionally well equipped ‘price entry level’ Liana 1.6 GL sedan, with full sized SRS driver and front passenger airbags, power steering, ABS with EBD, electric, heated door mirrors and front and rear windows, CD/radio, a digital clock and a very generous list of interior comfort, safety and security refinements as standard, is available on special offer for just £8,999 [delivered and on the road].

The ‘top of the range’ GLX which, with front side air bags, air conditioning, front fog lamps and remote control locking added to the GL’s specification, is also remarkable value-for-money at a special offer price of £9,999.

Exterior styling

The Liana sedan’s sleek monoform body design is elegant and distinctive from any angle.  At the front large triangular integrated lamp clusters, incorporating indicators and parking and driving lamps, are positioned alongside a bold, and new-for-2004, two bar grille sporting Suzuki’s distinctive ‘S’ mark emblem.  Viewed from above the nose of the car is tapered – to aid manoeuvrability in tight spaces – and, when viewed side on, the bodywork is contoured upwards and downwards creating a particularly elegant profile.

At the sides the A pillar bases are positioned as far forward as possible to allow a smooth, sleek and aerodynamically efficient line from the bonnet to the roof. The impression of smoothness is reinforced by low-profile side turn-signal lamps that use light-emitting diodes rather than conventional bulbs.

More distinctive features are incorporated in the sedan’s rear end design with the triangular design theme of the front lamp clusters repeated in the overall design of the large rear combination lights which flank the wide-opening boot lid.

Exterior dimensions

Compact exterior dimensions include an overall length of 14ft 3ins [4,350mm], nearly 5ins [120mm] longer than the 5-door hatchback, an overall width of 5ft 6ins [1,690mm] and a wheelbase of 8ft 2ins [2,480mm].    With an overall height of 5ft 1ins [1,545mm] the Liana is taller than competing vehicles, without detracting from its smooth, distinctive profile.

Interior dimensions

Although compact, the Liana provides adequate space for five adults.   Headroom is maximised by the high roof; shoulder room is enhanced by doors that are fitted as vertically as possible; and front and rear leg room is particularly generous.

High hip points of 23ins [586mm] in the front; 24.5ins [626mm] in the rear allow users to step into and out of the Liana easily and help to provide driver and passengers with an excellent view of the road and surroundings.

Comfortable seating positions

For 2004, the interior has been completely revised for even greater comfort and sophistication. Occupants are now presented with a stylish new fascia featuring a metallic silver finish applied to the centre console, air vent surrounds and the door-mounted window switches. A new design of analogue speedometer and tachometer are complemented by a digital clock and outside temperature gauge display built into the top of the fascia above the centre console.

The front and rear seats are designed to provide plenty of support and the driver’s seat has a lever type height-adjuster.  Combined with a tilt-adjustable steering wheel and well positioned pedals, both tall and short people should be able to find an optimum driving position. An armrest is provided on automatic models for extra comfort. Additional convenience features include a 12 volt accessory socket in the centre console and steering wheel mounted audio controls.

Boot space

The carpeted and illuminated boot has a class leading capacity of 413.4 litres [14.6 cu ft] plus two small compartments for fragile or valuable items.

Because the sedan’s rear seats are split 55/45 and can be folded flat, individually, the carrying capacity can be increased in order to accommodate large or unusually shaped packages.   It is opened using the ignition key or via a release lever located alongside the driver’s seat.

Extensive noise-reducing measures

Liana has numerous noise and vibration reducing features. They include a particularly rigid body structure formed from high-tensile steel; advanced engine and suspension mounting technologies; a specially-designed dashboard silencer; flush external body surfaces and double-seal weather strips.

Ventilation and air-conditioning systems

The heating and ventilation system has a high airflow capacity and incorporates a dehumidifying facility, side-window demisters and a radial type fan that minimises noise and power consumption.  The air-conditioning system [standard on the GLX] incorporates technology which assists in reducing fuel consumption.

Storage spaces for smaller items

Smaller items can be placed in sensibly-located spaces including the large lockable glove box; front-door pockets; front-seat back pockets; a sliding storage tray under the front-passenger-seat.  There are two front cup holders – which convert into a storage receptacle – and a rear cup holder.  Card holders are built into both sun visors, and there is also a roof mounted sunglasses holder.

Engine

UK Liana models are equipped with a 1.6-litre, DOHC, all-aluminium engine with electronic fuel injection that delivers power, driveability, quietness and fuel efficiency by maximising mid-range torque and minimising noise and vibration.

Suspension system

The suspension system is designed for responsiveness and ride comfort.  It uses MacPherson struts front and rear and its geometry, link layouts, mountings and bushings are all unique to the Liana.

Each damper has layered metal valves that control the damping force under a wide range of loading conditions whilst the rear suspension arms are attached to a rubber-mounted subframe to isolate the passenger compartment from road noise, vibration and harshness.

Brakes

Effective stopping power is provided by a 10-inch vacuum brake servo, 9.7inch ventilated disc brakes at the front and by leading/trailing drums at the rear. Four-wheel ABS, supplemented by an electronic braking-force distribution function [EBD], is standard on all models.

Choice of manual or automatic transmission

A five-speed manual transmission of light, compact design, working with a hydraulically-controlled clutch for easy operation, is standard.  A four-speed automatic transmission is available as an option on both models.

This gearbox features an electronic control system linked to the engine management system to minimise shift shock, and a torque-converter lockup in third and fourth gears to increase fuel efficiency.

Power steering

Hydraulic power steering is standard on both models. The hydraulic pump design minimises pulsation noise via bushings and has other features which maximise the gear case’s mounting rigidity, enabling optimal steering response with minimal vibration and noise.

Safety

The Liana’s structure protects occupants from impact forces by crumpling progressively around a rigid central cell that includes an impact beam in each side door. Its design enables the Liana to meet Suzuki’s internal testing requirements which reflect stringent European standards for occupant protection.

The front doors and B-pillars incorporate impact-absorbing pads and various plastic trim parts have impact-absorbing structures. These features minimise possible head and limb injuries in the event of a side collision.

Large glass areas and the high seating position for the driver ensure a commanding view of the road and of oncoming traffic.

Dual front SRS airbags are standard on both models and they complement the front seat belts in the event of a frontal collision.   The Liana GLX is also equipped with side airbags for additional protection in a side-on collision. Each side airbag has a volume of 10 litres and is incorporated into the front seats.

Quick, secure fitting of child seats is enabled by ISO-FIX child-seat fixings using special mechanisms in the rear seat belts.   Childproof rear door locks and a central locking system – controlled internally by a switch or from the outside by the key in the GL or by a remote control in the GLX – enable the driver to prevent children from opening the doors while the car is moving.

Front and rear seats are installed on reinforced mountings to help protect occupants from luggage that might be thrown forward in a frontal collision.

Technologies that further improve safety include three-point seat belts at the front (each has a pretensioner, a force limiter, and a height-adjustable shoulder anchor); three-point seat belts for three rear seat passengers and a high-mounted stop lamp.

Anti-theft technologies

The doors are protected against being opened with anything but the owner’s key or remote control, deadlocks prevent lock disengagement if a window is broken and a visible VIN helps to deter the serious thief. The lock mechanisms, protected inside the doors, are difficult to manipulate by inserting tools through the window seals.

External lock cylinders each have a freewheeling mechanism, so they spin uselessly if a thief attempts to force them using a screwdriver or the like, the fascia of the CD/radio is removable, relay switches in the wiring prevent electrical break-in, and further protection is provided by a strong steering lock and by an immobiliser that works with a coded chip hidden in the owner’s key.

Anti-corrosion measures

80 per cent of the body panels are of galvanised steel and under-body coatings are optimised.   As a result Liana is supplied with a 12-year perforation warranty.

Easy repairs

In order to ensure that repair costs and insurance premiums are minimised, parts at the front and rear of the body are designed to be easy to repair or replace after a low-speed collision.

Lifestyle accessories

Because many Liana sedan owners will wish to take advantage of the car’s impressive flexibility and the contributions that it can make to their individual lifestyles, a wide range of exclusive Suzuki designed and approved accessories is available.

Suzuki support

The 1.6-litre 4-door Suzuki Liana sedan is covered by Suzuki Shield, a

3 year / 60,000 mile new vehicle warranty [whichever comes first], by Suzuki Assistance, providing 24 hour roadside assistance, recovery and associated services for 3 years and by a 12 year perforation warranty.

It is available with Suzuki Low Cost Insurance and can be purchased with the help of a wide range of finance plans available from Suzuki Finance.

THE 5-DOOR LIANA: INNOVATIVE FAMILY MOTORING

The 5-door 1.6 litre Suzuki Liana, like its 4-door sedan sister, brings Suzuki’s flair for designing value packed passenger cars that appear bigger inside than out to the highly competitive and demanding ‘C’ segment of the UK market.

Exceptionally spacious, well equipped, and undeniably stylish, Liana is a family sized car that offers very competitive levels of performance, safety and security, minimal running costs and unbeatable value-for-money, as well as the practicality to satisfy the demands of a variety of lifestyles.

Liana demonstrates all the attributes that have made Suzuki’s smaller cars such as Wagon R+ and Ignis a resounding success, with the added flair and enhanced versatility made possible by upsizing.

For the UK ... two 1.6 litre models ... the GL and GLX

Two models are available – the GL and GLX – and both are powered by an identical, latest generation 1.6 litre, DOHC, 16-valve all-alloy engine developing 101.9bhp at 5,500 rpm and 106.1 lb.ft.of torque at 4,000 rpm. On the road, those figures translate into a top speed of 105.6 mph, a combined fuel consumption of 40.9 mpg and CO2 emissions of just 169 g/km.

Even the ‘price entry level’ Liana 1.6 GL – currently available at a very competitive £8,999 [delivered and on the road] – is exceptionally well equipped with full sized SRS driver and front passenger airbags, power steering, ABS with EBD, electric, heated mirrors and windows, radio/CD player incorporating a digital clock updated via satellite, and a very generous list of interior comfort, safety and security refinements as standard.

Top of the range is the GLX – currently available at £9,999 [delivered and on the road] which, with front side airbags, front fog lamps, air conditioning, alloy wheels and a CD player added to the GL’s specification is also unbeatable value-for-money in the class.

Exterior styling

The Liana’s sleek monoform body design is elegant and distinctive from any angle and – with a coefficient of drag of just 0.37 – particularly aerodynamically efficient.

At the front large triangular integrated lamp clusters, incorporating indicators and parking and driving lamps, are positioned alongside a bold, new-for-2004, two bar grille sporting Suzuki’s distinctive ‘S’ mark emblem.  Seen from above the nose of the car is tapered to aid manoeuvrability in tight spaces and, when viewed side on, the bodywork sweeps upwards adding to an overall impression of elegance.

More unique design features can be found at the rear.   The D pillars taper toward their base, helping to create an exterior impression of lightness and an interior feeling of spaciousness, whilst the triangular design theme of the front lamp clusters is repeated in the overall design of the tailgate and rear combination lights.

Exterior Dimensions

Compact exterior dimensions include an overall length of 13ft 9ins [4,230mm], an overall width of 5ft 6ins [1,690mm] and a wheelbase of 8ft 2ins [2,480mm].    With an overall height of 5ft 1.5ins [1,550mm] the Liana is taller than competing vehicles, without detracting from its smooth, contoured shape.

Interior dimensions

Although compact, the Liana provides adequate space for five adults.   Headroom is maximised by the high roof; shoulder room is enhanced by doors that are fitted as vertically as possible; and front and rear leg room is particularly generous.

High hip points of 23 ins [586mm] in the front; 24.5ins [626mm] in the rear allow users to step into and out of the Liana easily and help to provide driver and passengers with an excellent view of the road and surroundings.

Extensive noise-reducing measures

Liana has numerous noise and vibration reducing features. They include a particularly rigid body structure formed from high-tensile steel; advanced engine and suspension mounting technologies; a specially-designed dashboard silencer; flush external body surfaces and double-seal weather strips.

 Ventilation and air-conditioning systems

The heating and ventilation system has a high airflow capacity and incorporates a dehumidifying facility, side-window demisters and a new type radial fan that minimizes noise and power consumption.  The air-conditioning system [standard on the GLX] incorporates technology which assists in reducing fuel consumption.

Spacious, accessible luggage area

With every seat in its normal position, the luggage area is 30.7ins [780mm] long, 51.1ins [1,300mm] wide and, benefiting from the tall roof, 34ins [865mm] high.   Luggage is easy to load and unload thanks to a wide tailgate opening and to a luggage-area floor height of 25ins [635mm] measured from the ground.

Choice of rear seat arrangements

The rear seat is split 55:45 and each side can be double-folded virtually flat to expand the available luggage space, providing great flexibility when carrying large or unusually shaped packages.

Storage spaces for smaller items

Smaller items can be placed in sensibly-located spaces including the large lockable glove box; front-door pockets; front-seat back pockets; a sliding storage tray under the front-passenger-seat; a front cup holder which converts into a storage receptacle; a rear cup holder and a driver’s-seat card holder. A sunglasses holder is provided in the roof.

Engine

UK Liana models are equipped with a 1.6-litre, DOHC, all-aluminium engine with electronic fuel injection that delivers power, driveability, quietness and fuel efficiency by maximising mid-range torque and minimising noise and vibration.

 New suspension system

The suspension system is designed for responsiveness and ride comfort.  It uses MacPherson struts front and rear and its geometry, link layouts, mountings and bushings are all unique to the Liana.

Each damper has layered metal valves that control the damping force under a wide range of loading conditions whilst the rear suspension arms are attached to a rubber-mounted subframe to isolate the passenger compartment from road noise, vibration and harshness.

Specially developed tyres

New tyres were developed for the Liana.   Those for the GL are 185/65R14 which enhance fuel efficiency, ride comfort and quietness whilst the six spoke alloy wheels fitted as standard on the GLX are shod with 195/55R15 tyres developed with a primary focus on dynamic performance.

A five-speed manual transmission of light, compact design, working with an hydraulically-controlled clutch for easy operation, is standard.

The hydraulic pump has an advanced design that minimises pulsation noise via bushings and other features which maximise the gear case’s mounting rigidity, enabling optimal steering response with minimal vibration and noise.

Dual front SRS airbags are standard on the GL and they complement the front seat belts in the event of a frontal collision.   The Liana GLX is also equipped with side airbags for additional protection in a side-on collision. Each side airbag has a volume of 10 litres and is incorporated into the front seats.

Quick, secure fitting of child seats is enabled by a child-seat fixing device in the rear seat and by special mechanisms in the rear seat belts.   Childproof rear door locks and a central locking system enable the driver to prevent children from opening the doors while the car is moving.

Front and rear seats are installed on reinforced mountings to help protect occupants from luggage that might be thrown forward in a frontal collision.

Technologies that further improve safety include three-point seat belts at the front (each has a pretensioner, a force limiter, and a height-adjustable shoulder anchor); three 3-point seatbelts in the rear and a high mounted stop lamp.

Anti-theft technologies

The doors are protected against being opened with anything but the owner’s key, deadlocks prevent lock disengagement even if a window is broken and a visible VIN helps to deter the more serious thief. The lock mechanisms, protected inside the doors, are difficult to manipulate by inserting tools through the window seals.

External lock cylinders each have a freewheeling mechanism, so they spin uselessly if a thief attempts to force them using a screwdriver or the like, the fascia of the radio/CD player is removable, relay switches in the wiring prevent electrical break-in, and further protection is provided by a strong steering lock and by an immobiliser that works with a coded chip hidden in the owner’s key.

4 DOOR

5 DOOR

A five-speed manual transmission of light, compact design, working with an hydraulically-controlled clutch for easy operation, is standard.

The hydraulic pump has an advanced design that minimises pulsation noise via bushings and other features which maximise the gear case’s mounting rigidity, enabling optimal steering response with minimal vibration and noise.

 Anti-corrosion measures

80 percent of the body panels are made of galvanised steel and under-body coatings are optimised.   As a result Liana is supplied with a 12-year perforation warranty.

Easy repairs

In order to ensure that repair costs and insurance premiums are minimised parts at the front and rear of the body are designed to be easy to repair or replace after a low-speed collision.

Lifestyle accessories

Because many Liana owners will wish to take advantage of the car’s impressive flexibility and the contributions that it can make to their individual lifestyles a wide range of exclusive Suzuki designed and approved accessories is to be available.

Suzuki support

The 1.6-litre 5-door Suzuki Liana is covered by Suzuki Shield, a 3 year / 60,000 mile new vehicle warranty [whichever comes first], by Suzuki Assistance, providing 24 hour roadside assistance, recovery and associated services for 3 years and by a 12 year perforation warranty.

It is available with Suzuki Low Cost Insurance and can be purchased with the help of a wide range of finance plans available from Suzuki Finance.
