Ever since its market launch in 1988, the Suzuki Vitara series has earned high acclaim for stylish, city oriented designs, compact and easy to manage dimensions, good on-road performance and genuine off-road capability. The series has evolved through changes in body size and powertrain.

Seven months after the UK launch of Vitara , Suzuki introduced the S model which provides a  more sporting and dynamic character to the line up. Vitara has already proved to be a very popular model with over 11,000 units sold since launch in May 2015.  

The Vitara S is produced alongside other Vitara models at the Magyar Suzuki plant in Hungary. This plant also produces all Swift and S-Cross models for European markets as well as exports around the world.

Exterior design

The Vitara expresses Suzuki’s SUV styling heritage in a strong looking design. The clamshell bonnet (a hallmark of Vitara models) gives the front end a look of solidity, and a trapezoid motif front bumper indicates powerful grip on the ground. Pronounced body side character lines and bonnet side louvres form motifs reminiscent of the first generation Vitara.

Suzuki’s pursuit of good aerodynamics is reflected in optimally designed bumpers, in a roof line that slopes smoothly downward toward the rear, in flat underbody surfaces, and in specially shaped side mirrors based on the results of airflow analysis. LED headlamps with blue projector covers (available on SZ5 grade only) contribute to energy saving while also creating a cool impression and the new S model has LED headlamps with red projector covers that help give a sporty impression.

Standard equipment for all Vitara models is comprehensive and the SZ4 model includes seven airbags, alloy wheels, DAB Radio with USB and Bluetooth connectivity, cruise control with speed limiter, auto air conditioning and front and rear electric windows.  

SZ-T adds 17-inch silver painted alloy wheels, rear privacy glass, Smartphone link audio and navigation system.

Moving up to SZ5 adds LED Projector headlights, 17-inch polished alloy wheels, suede seat fabric, keyless entry with start button, Adaptive Cruise Control, Radar Brake Support and Panoramic sunroof.

The S model is equipped with 17-inch Gloss black alloy wheels, unique grille design, satin silver door mirrors, rear upper spoiler and black side body mouldings. For the interior the sporting theme continues with red interior stitching, red air conditioning vent and instrument accents and aluminium alloy pedals.

Engines and transmissions

Boosterjet Engine – in detail

The S model was the first Suzuki to be launched that utilises the Boosterjet technology petrol engine which in Vitara is a 140PS 1.4-litre Direct Injection turbocharged unit (DITC). This new engine has compact dimensions and offers 220Nm of torque available from just 1,500rpm through to 4,000rpm. This engine was then introduced in the S-Cross facelift model in October 2016.

The Boosterjet engine is a newly developed Suzuki unit that is characterised by improved fuel efficiency and driving pleasure made possible by using a small displacement, high torque turbocharger. By controlling the wastegate valve, which closes to create higher boost pressure during heavy load operation and remains open during normal driving, the Boosterjet reduces pumping loss, thus achieving high levels of both power and fuel-efficiency. An air bypass valve is also utilised to prevent turbo ‘stall’ after the throttle has been closed and then quickly reopened.

The 1.4-litre engine employs six-hole fuel injectors and high tumble port technologies to inject fuel with a high combustion efficiency to provide greater fuel economy and improved power output.  

Fuel is injected at a pressure of 200 Bar into the combustion chamber during the air intake stroke which then forms a rich mixture around the spark plug and leaner mixture around the outer edge of the piston. The tumble flow of the fuel is created by utilising a straight intake port and a complex shape piston crown design.

The Boosterjet engine has been developed with Suzuki’s ethos of reducing weight and size, with added response and smooth power delivery to achieve the characteristics Suzuki engines are well renowned for.

During development, Suzuki’s engineers virtually eliminated the typical delay in turbo power delivery or ‘lag’ by installing the specially developed compact turbo charger attached directly to the cylinder head as well as incorporating the exhaust manifold into the cylinder head casting. This design ensures optimum gas flow with minimal heat loss through to the turbo unit. The turbocharger has a boost pressure of 1.1 Bar.

Historically, power and torque delivery from a turbocharged engine would not have been available until much higher engine speeds, offering less flexibility to the driver.

The 1.4-litre engine offers strong benefits in performance too with a 0-62mph acceleration time of 10.2 seconds (for ALLGRIP models) for both manual and automatic transmissions and a maximum speed, where permitted, of 124mph.

With the normally aspirated 1.6-litre petrol engine, friction reductions combined with weight savings in the engine and related components help to achieve good fuel economy together with a power output of 120PS and 156Nm of torque available at 4,400rpm. For the DDiS engine, an EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system and an electronically controlled VGT (Variable Geometry Turbocharger) help achieve powerful performance and torque together with very low emissions, with 320Nm of torque is available from just 1,750rpm. The 1.6-litre petrol and DDiS engines remain unchanged since launch earlier in 2015.

 

Manual transmissions

A six-speed manual transmission is fitted as standard for the new 1.4-litre Boosterjet engine and a five-speed for the 1.6-litre petrol engine. The 1.6-litre DDiS model also has six-speed manual transmission as standard. Each manual transmission’s gear ratios are optimised to help provide a good combination of performance and fuel economy. Additional measures include a shift lever counterweight to help provide a smooth, positive shift action.

Automatic transmission

A six-speed automatic transmission is available optionally for the 1.4-litre Boosterjet and 1.6-litre petrol engines. It has a wide gear ratio range to permit precise driver control and which also helps provide quick response at low vehicle speeds (for instance, when pulling away from standstill or driving slowly uphill) The wide ratios also help the engine to run at lower rpm when cruising too.  The transmission has an expanded lockup range to promote good acceleration, high fuel economy and low levels of NVH. Additionally, a manual mode is fitted to enable the driver to change gear using shift paddles behind the steering wheel.

Twin Clutch System by Suzuki (TCSS)

Introduced for Vitara in April 2016, the TCSS transmission is an automated manual transmission with hydraulically controlled clutch and gear change facility, meaning the driver experience is equivalent to driving a car fitted with a conventional automatic transmission.

TCSS uses two clutches (known as odd and even); one to engage and disengage 1st, 3rd and 5th gears and another for 2nd, 4th and 6th gears. Whether the driver is accelerating or decelerating, the next required gear is always available instantly.

Coupled to the Euro 6 compliant 1.6-litre DDiS engine, the transmission provides even faster gearchanges than could be achieved with a conventional manual and is an ideal match for the 320Nm of torque available from just 1,750rpm. Gearchanges can also be manually operated via paddles behind the steering wheel.

Gear ratios are slightly different for the TCSS equipped model and a full specification sheet can be found on the media website. The marginally heavier transmission / ancilliary parts result in a negligible increase in fuel consumption versus the manual ALLGRIP version (- 4.5mpg) but still attains 62.7mpg on the EC combined cycle.  CO2 emissions are just 7g/km higher than with the manual gearbox at 118g/km.

Operating in a similar way to a conventional automatic transmission, the TCSS system also incorporates a Creep facility that allows the vehicle to move at a slow speed (approx 5mph) when in heavy traffic or to assist the driver during parking. This facility is cancelled however when driven on an incline of more than five per cent or if the TCSS system is below normal operating temperature.

Additionally, when the vehicle is driven on a decline and the clutch system detects that the increasing road speed is nearing a specificied value, it will automatically engage the clutch to provide engine braking.

CO2 emissions

The Vitara’s CO2 emissions are low thanks to the use of high tensile steel and other weight saving measures in the body. This has resulted in the Vitara being one of the lightest SUV’s in it class at just 1,075 kg for the 1.6-litre two wheel drive models with manual transmission.

An Engine Auto Stop Start system is also used which shuts down the engine when stationary.

Four-wheel drive is typically seen as detrimental to fuel economy and emissions performance. By contrast, Suzuki’s ALLGRIP system enables CO2 emissions that are remarkably low for a four-wheel drive SUV. CO2 emissions for the 1.4-litre Boosterjet petrol engine with its standard ALLGRIP system and manual transmission is 127g/km and just one gram higher for the optional automatic transmission.

The 1.6-litre petrol engine with two-wheel drive has CO2 emissions of 123g/km, the ALLGRIP equipped 1.6-litre with five-speed manual transmission has a figure of 130g/km and 131g/km with the six-speed automatic transmission.

The Vitara also has very low CO2 emissions with the DDiS engine, emitting just 106g/km with two-wheel drive / six-speed manual transmission and 111g/km with four-wheel drive / six-speed manual transmission.

 

Four-mode ALLGRIP system

Suzuki evolved its renowned four wheel drive technologies into a new generation that delivers driving pleasure and peace of mind in diverse conditions while promoting economy and limiting the burden four wheel drive cars place on the environment.

Suzuki’s ALLGRIP system is fitted as standard on the S and available as an option on SZ5 models. It has four driver-selectable modes for safe, enjoyable driving on diverse surfaces. It debuted in the S-Cross model in 2013 and has since proved very successful. In development, the Vitara ALLGRIP system was enhanced by the addition of a feed forward function that allocates torque to the rear wheels before any slippage can occur. The system’s four driver-selectable modes are as follows:

Auto

The auto mode prioritises fuel economy in typical driving conditions and uses two-wheel drive by default. It switches to four wheel drive if it detects wheel spin.

Sport

The sport mode is optimal for twisty roads. The system makes maximal use of four-wheel drive in accordance with accelerator inputs. At low and mid-range engine speeds, the system alters the accelerator/torque characteristics to optimise engine response and cornering performance.

Snow

The snow mode is optimal for snowy, unpaved, and other slippery surfaces. The system uses four-wheel drive by default. It optimises four-wheel drive control in accordance with steering and accelerator inputs to promote traction and stability on low friction surfaces.

Lock

The lock mode is for extricating the car from snow, mud, or sand. A limited slip differential is fitted which helps brake any slipping wheel and transfer torque to the gripping wheels.

 

4WD Control

On conventional full time 4WD vehicles, feedback control allocates torque to the rear wheels after detecting front wheel drive slippage.

On Vitara, as well as offering feedback control it also offers feed forward control that anticipates slippage based on road surface, throttle opening position, steering angle and other factors. In summary, rather than reacting after grip is lost, it controls the vehicle to prevent grip from being lost which results in greater stability.

Hill Hold Control

Available as standard equipment on all Vitara models, Hill Hold Control makes hill starts much easier by preventing the vehicle from rolling backwards for two seconds as soon as the driver removes his or her foot from the brake to the accelerator pedal.

Hill Descent Control

This system is fitted as standard on S and SZ5 ALLGRIP models. When the vehicle is travelling down a steep downward slope and engine braking is not sufficient to slow the vehicle, Hill Descent Control will automatically apply the brakes to restrict vehicle speed, thus allowing the driver to maintain full control and concentrate on steering the car safely.

Suspension

The front suspension is of MacPherson strut design. During development of the new Vitara in 2014, revised shapes for the lower arms and suspension frame were utilised and improved struts adopted for higher rigidity and also promote better driving stability. The rear wheel suspension incorporates a beam design (a closed section consisting of a pipe crushed to form a “U” shape) that Suzuki first adopted in the S-Cross. This beam design provides superior rigidity and ride comfort.

Brakes

The Vitara has ventilated disc brakes at the front and solid disc brakes at the rear. Weight savings and drag reductions in the calliper design help provide superior braking performance and also assist fuel economy.

The Suzuki Vitara is rated one of Europe‘s safest cars according to independent crash testing results from Euro NCAP, and received the maximum 5-star rating. Vitara was also the first compact SUV to earn five stars in the more rigorous 2015 Euro NCAP testing programme which reinforces the exemplary level of safety of the model.

The Vitara’s passive and active safety systems are designed to intelligently anticipate and react to potentially dangerous situations with an excellent level of protection. One of its major safety features is Total Effective Control Technology which is a concept for occupant protecting impact absorption and low weight developed by Suzuki. Extensive use of high tensile steel and computer aided engineering technologies make the body light, highly crashworthy as well as fuel efficient.

 

Standard safety equipment includes seven airbags which includes a driver’s knee airbag as well as seat belt pre-tensioners and force limiters. Euro NCAP’s tests on the front seats and head restraints showed good protection against whiplash injury in the event of a rear end collision and a geometric assessment of the rear seats also indicated good protection.

 

Suzuki paid particular attention to child safety in accordance with latest European legislation and pedestrian protection received the highest score amongst its competitors thanks to the bonnet shape and structures for the cowl top and wipers. The bumpers also provide good impact absorption to lessen the degree of harm if the car comes into contact with a pedestrian.

Safety equipment

The Vitara’s active safety equipment includes a Radar Brake Support (RBS) system on SZ5 and S models.  When travelling above approximately 3mph and the system detects a risk of collision with the vehicle in front, it warns the driver to apply the brakes. At higher speeds and if it senses the possibility of a collision, it warns the driver with a buzzer and also via a notification on the multi information display. The system warning can also be set for either Far or Near distance via a button on the dashboard.

If the probability of a collision has increased, the system activates brake assist which increases the braking force during emergency braking. If the system determines that a collision is unavoidable, it applies the brakes automatically. The system thus helps prevent collisions when the vehicle is driving at low speeds and helps reduce damage in the event of an unavoidable collision.

The RBS system fitted as standard on S and SZ5 models monitors the road ahead by means of milliwave radar. The radar technology enables it to work even at high speeds, in darkness, and in rain or other bad weather. The system prevents or mitigates a collision by means of three functions which are Warning, Brake Asssist and Automatic Braking.

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) system

The Vitara’s ACC system fitted as standard on S and SZ5 models combines cruise control technology with the RBS system’s milliwave radar to make driving easier and more relaxing. The system uses radar to measure the distance to the vehicle in front and automatically adjusts road speed to maintain any of three driver selected headway distances.

If there is a sufficient distance from the vehicle ahead, the Vitara travels at the set input  speed. If the vehicle in front is travelling slower the set speed will automatically reduce to allow sufficient distance to be be maintained. Once the millimetre wave sensor detects that the vehicle in front has departed from the lane in front the vehicle will automatically reaccelerate to the input set speed.

Light, impact-absorbing TECT body

The body embodies Suzuki’s Total Effective Control Technology (TECT) concept for occupant protecting impact absorption and low weight. Extensive use of ultrahigh tensile steel helps to make the new Vitara outstandingly crashworthy and fuel efficient.

Body dimensions

The Vitara’s SUV packaging combines generous minimum ground clearance of 185mm with large, 215/55R17 tyres on SZ-T, SZ5 and S grades. Plus, an 18.2° approach angle and a 28.2° departure angle help assist the driver in various off road conditions.

The luggage area has a capacity of 375 litres (VDA) with the rear seat in its upright position and the rear seat and luggage board can also be repositioned to suit luggage requirements.

Panoramic sunroof

Suzuki achieved a world first* in 2013 by equipping the S-Cross with a sunroof consisting of two individually sliding glass panels and the Vitara incorporates the same highly acclaimed feature. The sunroof extends over the front and rear seats, making the cabin more relaxing for all occupants.

When the sunroof is closed, the glass panels have a combined length of 1,000mm. When   open, the aperture has a length of 560mm (one of the largest in the class), giving occupants an invigorating open-roof experience.

Display audio system with navigation and smartphone connectivity

The audio system has a seven inch touch panel display that enables intuitive operation and can also be used by people wearing gloves. A three dimensional navigation map makes landmarks easy to distinguish and the system allows the driver to use certain smartphone applications.

Boosterjet Engine – in detail

The S model was the first Suzuki to be launched that utilises the Boosterjet technology petrol engine which in Vitara is a 140PS 1.4-litre Direct Injection turbocharged unit (DITC). This new engine has compact dimensions and offers 220Nm of torque available from just 1,500rpm through to 4,000rpm. This engine was then introduced in the S-Cross facelift model in October 2016.

The Boosterjet engine is a newly developed Suzuki unit that is characterised by improved fuel efficiency and driving pleasure made possible by using a small displacement, high torque turbocharger. By controlling the wastegate valve, which closes to create higher boost pressure during heavy load operation and remains open during normal driving, the Boosterjet reduces pumping loss, thus achieving high levels of both power and fuel-efficiency. An air bypass valve is also utilised to prevent turbo ‘stall’ after the throttle has been closed and then quickly reopened.

The 1.4-litre engine employs six-hole fuel injectors and high tumble port technologies to inject fuel with a high combustion efficiency to provide greater fuel economy and improved power output.  

Fuel is injected at a pressure of 200 Bar into the combustion chamber during the air intake stroke which then forms a rich mixture around the spark plug and leaner mixture around the outer edge of the piston. The tumble flow of the fuel is created by utilising a straight intake port and a complex shape piston crown design.

The Boosterjet engine has been developed with Suzuki’s ethos of reducing weight and size, with added response and smooth power delivery to achieve the characteristics Suzuki engines are well renowned for.

During development, Suzuki’s engineers virtually eliminated the typical delay in turbo power delivery or ‘lag’ by installing the specially developed compact turbo charger attached directly to the cylinder head as well as incorporating the exhaust manifold into the cylinder head casting. This design ensures optimum gas flow with minimal heat loss through to the turbo unit. The turbocharger has a boost pressure of 1.1 Bar.

Historically, power and torque delivery from a turbocharged engine would not have been available until much higher engine speeds, offering less flexibility to the driver.

The 1.4-litre engine offers strong benefits in performance too with a 0-62mph acceleration time of 10.2 seconds (for ALLGRIP models) for both manual and automatic transmissions and a maximum speed, where permitted, of 124mph.

With the normally aspirated 1.6-litre petrol engine, friction reductions combined with weight savings in the engine and related components help to achieve good fuel economy together with a power output of 120PS and 156Nm of torque available at 4,400rpm. For the DDiS engine, an EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system and an electronically controlled VGT (Variable Geometry Turbocharger) help achieve powerful performance and torque together with very low emissions, with 320Nm of torque is available from just 1,750rpm. The 1.6-litre petrol and DDiS engines remain unchanged since launch earlier in 2015.

 

Manual transmissions

A six-speed manual transmission is fitted as standard for the new 1.4-litre Boosterjet engine and a five-speed for the 1.6-litre petrol engine. The 1.6-litre DDiS model also has six-speed manual transmission as standard. Each manual transmission’s gear ratios are optimised to help provide a good combination of performance and fuel economy. Additional measures include a shift lever counterweight to help provide a smooth, positive shift action.

Automatic transmission

A six-speed automatic transmission is available optionally for the 1.4-litre Boosterjet and 1.6-litre petrol engines. It has a wide gear ratio range to permit precise driver control and which also helps provide quick response at low vehicle speeds (for instance, when pulling away from standstill or driving slowly uphill) The wide ratios also help the engine to run at lower rpm when cruising too.  The transmission has an expanded lockup range to promote good acceleration, high fuel economy and low levels of NVH. Additionally, a manual mode is fitted to enable the driver to change gear using shift paddles behind the steering wheel.

Twin Clutch System by Suzuki (TCSS)

Introduced for Vitara in April 2016, the TCSS transmission is an automated manual transmission with hydraulically controlled clutch and gear change facility, meaning the driver experience is equivalent to driving a car fitted with a conventional automatic transmission.

TCSS uses two clutches (known as odd and even); one to engage and disengage 1st, 3rd and 5th gears and another for 2nd, 4th and 6th gears. Whether the driver is accelerating or decelerating, the next required gear is always available instantly.

Coupled to the Euro 6 compliant 1.6-litre DDiS engine, the transmission provides even faster gearchanges than could be achieved with a conventional manual and is an ideal match for the 320Nm of torque available from just 1,750rpm. Gearchanges can also be manually operated via paddles behind the steering wheel.

Gear ratios are slightly different for the TCSS equipped model and a full specification sheet can be found on the media website. The marginally heavier transmission / ancilliary parts result in a negligible increase in fuel consumption versus the manual ALLGRIP version (- 4.5mpg) but still attains 62.7mpg on the EC combined cycle.  CO2 emissions are just 7g/km higher than with the manual gearbox at 118g/km.

Operating in a similar way to a conventional automatic transmission, the TCSS system also incorporates a Creep facility that allows the vehicle to move at a slow speed (approx 5mph) when in heavy traffic or to assist the driver during parking. This facility is cancelled however when driven on an incline of more than five per cent or if the TCSS system is below normal operating temperature.

Additionally, when the vehicle is driven on a decline and the clutch system detects that the increasing road speed is nearing a specificied value, it will automatically engage the clutch to provide engine braking.

CO2 emissions

The Vitara’s CO2 emissions are low thanks to the use of high tensile steel and other weight saving measures in the body. This has resulted in the Vitara being one of the lightest SUV’s in it class at just 1,075 kg for the 1.6-litre two wheel drive models with manual transmission.

An Engine Auto Stop Start system is also used which shuts down the engine when stationary.

Four-wheel drive is typically seen as detrimental to fuel economy and emissions performance. By contrast, Suzuki’s ALLGRIP system enables CO2 emissions that are remarkably low for a four-wheel drive SUV. CO2 emissions for the 1.4-litre Boosterjet petrol engine with its standard ALLGRIP system and manual transmission is 127g/km and just one gram higher for the optional automatic transmission.

The 1.6-litre petrol engine with two-wheel drive has CO2 emissions of 123g/km, the ALLGRIP equipped 1.6-litre with five-speed manual transmission has a figure of 130g/km and 131g/km with the six-speed automatic transmission.

The Vitara also has very low CO2 emissions with the DDiS engine, emitting just 106g/km with two-wheel drive / six-speed manual transmission and 111g/km with four-wheel drive / six-speed manual transmission.

 

Four-mode ALLGRIP system

Suzuki evolved its renowned four wheel drive technologies into a new generation that delivers driving pleasure and peace of mind in diverse conditions while promoting economy and limiting the burden four wheel drive cars place on the environment.

Suzuki’s ALLGRIP system is fitted as standard on the S and available as an option on SZ5 models. It has four driver-selectable modes for safe, enjoyable driving on diverse surfaces. It debuted in the S-Cross model in 2013 and has since proved very successful. In development, the Vitara ALLGRIP system was enhanced by the addition of a feed forward function that allocates torque to the rear wheels before any slippage can occur. The system’s four driver-selectable modes are as follows:

Auto

The auto mode prioritises fuel economy in typical driving conditions and uses two-wheel drive by default. It switches to four wheel drive if it detects wheel spin.

Sport

The sport mode is optimal for twisty roads. The system makes maximal use of four-wheel drive in accordance with accelerator inputs. At low and mid-range engine speeds, the system alters the accelerator/torque characteristics to optimise engine response and cornering performance.

Snow

The snow mode is optimal for snowy, unpaved, and other slippery surfaces. The system uses four-wheel drive by default. It optimises four-wheel drive control in accordance with steering and accelerator inputs to promote traction and stability on low friction surfaces.

Lock

The lock mode is for extricating the car from snow, mud, or sand. A limited slip differential is fitted which helps brake any slipping wheel and transfer torque to the gripping wheels.

 

4WD Control

On conventional full time 4WD vehicles, feedback control allocates torque to the rear wheels after detecting front wheel drive slippage.

On Vitara, as well as offering feedback control it also offers feed forward control that anticipates slippage based on road surface, throttle opening position, steering angle and other factors. In summary, rather than reacting after grip is lost, it controls the vehicle to prevent grip from being lost which results in greater stability.

Hill Hold Control

Available as standard equipment on all Vitara models, Hill Hold Control makes hill starts much easier by preventing the vehicle from rolling backwards for two seconds as soon as the driver removes his or her foot from the brake to the accelerator pedal.

Hill Descent Control

This system is fitted as standard on S and SZ5 ALLGRIP models. When the vehicle is travelling down a steep downward slope and engine braking is not sufficient to slow the vehicle, Hill Descent Control will automatically apply the brakes to restrict vehicle speed, thus allowing the driver to maintain full control and concentrate on steering the car safely.

Suspension

The front suspension is of MacPherson strut design. During development of the new Vitara in 2014, revised shapes for the lower arms and suspension frame were utilised and improved struts adopted for higher rigidity and also promote better driving stability. The rear wheel suspension incorporates a beam design (a closed section consisting of a pipe crushed to form a “U” shape) that Suzuki first adopted in the S-Cross. This beam design provides superior rigidity and ride comfort.

Brakes

The Vitara has ventilated disc brakes at the front and solid disc brakes at the rear. Weight savings and drag reductions in the calliper design help provide superior braking performance and also assist fuel economy.

The Suzuki Vitara is rated one of Europe‘s safest cars according to independent crash testing results from Euro NCAP, and received the maximum 5-star rating. Vitara was also the first compact SUV to earn five stars in the more rigorous 2015 Euro NCAP testing programme which reinforces the exemplary level of safety of the model.

The Vitara’s passive and active safety systems are designed to intelligently anticipate and react to potentially dangerous situations with an excellent level of protection. One of its major safety features is Total Effective Control Technology which is a concept for occupant protecting impact absorption and low weight developed by Suzuki. Extensive use of high tensile steel and computer aided engineering technologies make the body light, highly crashworthy as well as fuel efficient.

 

Standard safety equipment includes seven airbags which includes a driver’s knee airbag as well as seat belt pre-tensioners and force limiters. Euro NCAP’s tests on the front seats and head restraints showed good protection against whiplash injury in the event of a rear end collision and a geometric assessment of the rear seats also indicated good protection.

 

Suzuki paid particular attention to child safety in accordance with latest European legislation and pedestrian protection received the highest score amongst its competitors thanks to the bonnet shape and structures for the cowl top and wipers. The bumpers also provide good impact absorption to lessen the degree of harm if the car comes into contact with a pedestrian.

Safety equipment

The Vitara’s active safety equipment includes a Radar Brake Support (RBS) system on SZ5 and S models.  When travelling above approximately 3mph and the system detects a risk of collision with the vehicle in front, it warns the driver to apply the brakes. At higher speeds and if it senses the possibility of a collision, it warns the driver with a buzzer and also via a notification on the multi information display. The system warning can also be set for either Far or Near distance via a button on the dashboard.

If the probability of a collision has increased, the system activates brake assist which increases the braking force during emergency braking. If the system determines that a collision is unavoidable, it applies the brakes automatically. The system thus helps prevent collisions when the vehicle is driving at low speeds and helps reduce damage in the event of an unavoidable collision.

The RBS system fitted as standard on S and SZ5 models monitors the road ahead by means of milliwave radar. The radar technology enables it to work even at high speeds, in darkness, and in rain or other bad weather. The system prevents or mitigates a collision by means of three functions which are Warning, Brake Asssist and Automatic Braking.

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) system

The Vitara’s ACC system fitted as standard on S and SZ5 models combines cruise control technology with the RBS system’s milliwave radar to make driving easier and more relaxing. The system uses radar to measure the distance to the vehicle in front and automatically adjusts road speed to maintain any of three driver selected headway distances.

If there is a sufficient distance from the vehicle ahead, the Vitara travels at the set input  speed. If the vehicle in front is travelling slower the set speed will automatically reduce to allow sufficient distance to be be maintained. Once the millimetre wave sensor detects that the vehicle in front has departed from the lane in front the vehicle will automatically reaccelerate to the input set speed.

Light, impact-absorbing TECT body

The body embodies Suzuki’s Total Effective Control Technology (TECT) concept for occupant protecting impact absorption and low weight. Extensive use of ultrahigh tensile steel helps to make the new Vitara outstandingly crashworthy and fuel efficient.

Body dimensions

The Vitara’s SUV packaging combines generous minimum ground clearance of 185mm with large, 215/55R17 tyres on SZ-T, SZ5 and S grades. Plus, an 18.2° approach angle and a 28.2° departure angle help assist the driver in various off road conditions.

The luggage area has a capacity of 375 litres (VDA) with the rear seat in its upright position and the rear seat and luggage board can also be repositioned to suit luggage requirements.

Panoramic sunroof

Suzuki achieved a world first* in 2013 by equipping the S-Cross with a sunroof consisting of two individually sliding glass panels and the Vitara incorporates the same highly acclaimed feature. The sunroof extends over the front and rear seats, making the cabin more relaxing for all occupants.

When the sunroof is closed, the glass panels have a combined length of 1,000mm. When   open, the aperture has a length of 560mm (one of the largest in the class), giving occupants an invigorating open-roof experience.

Display audio system with navigation and smartphone connectivity

The audio system has a seven inch touch panel display that enables intuitive operation and can also be used by people wearing gloves. A three dimensional navigation map makes landmarks easy to distinguish and the system allows the driver to use certain smartphone applications.
