The good news for Suzuki customers is that all 2004 models – across the range – now boast an increased specification and there’s nothing extra to pay. Safety continues as a priority with driver and passenger airbags fitted even to entry level models, while the standard ABS system with EBD (Electronic Brake force Distribution) ensures braking effort between front and rear wheels is adjusted according to the weight distribution at any given time, for maximum retardation. And as well as the reassurance of a comprehensive safety package, occupants will also be able to enjoy a standard fitment radio with integrated CD player.

Simultaneously Suzuki is also introducing a substantially facelifted Liana range. Liana, the Company’s C-segment contender has rapidly built a strong following as its top value-for-money, family car credentials have become more widely recognised. The latest 2004 4-door sedan and 5-door hatchback models are set to widen that popularity thanks to major revisions and prices held down to 2003 levels.

An even more reasonably priced car

On the outside, Liana models now present a bolder on road presence with the introduction of a new two bar grille sporting Suzuki’s distinctive new ‘S’ mark emblem, body-coloured side mouldings and bumper corner mouldings.

The biggest changes are saved for the cabin, however, where the interior has been completely revised for even greater comfort and sophistication. Occupants are now presented with a stylish new fascia featuring a metallic silver finish applied to the centre console, air vent surrounds and the door-mounted window switches. A new design of analogue speedometer and tachometer are complemented by a digital clock and outside temperature gauge display built into the top of the fascia above the centre console.

Revised front seat cushions provide even greater support whilst reshaped door pockets have increased the footwell width. The driver’s seat now has a lever type height adjuster, and for extra comfort, an armrest is provided on automatic transmission-equipped models.

Additional standard convenience features include a roof-mounted sunglasses holder, 12 volt accessory socket in the centre console, steering wheel-mounted audio controls and heated, electrically operated door mirrors.

There are two Liana grades, GL and GLX, with the latter equipped as standard with air conditioning, front side airbags and front fog lights. In common with all Suzukis, ABS with EBD is now across the range.

The Liana’s sparkling performance – clear for all to see in BBC Top Gear’s ‘star in a reasonably priced car’ feature – is provided by a 1,586 cc DOHC all-alloy engine producing 104.6 bhp (106.1 PS; 78 kW) at 5,500 rpm and 106.1 lb.ft
(14.7 kg.m; 143.9 Nm) at 4000 rpm. On the road, those figures translate into a top speed of 105.6 mph, a combined fuel consumption of 40.9 mpg and CO2 emissions of just 169 g/km.

Minimal running costs then, matched to extensive revisions, make ‘reasonably priced car’ an even more apt description for the Liana range, especially since there are current On The Road Price offers for the manual transmission GL sedan and hatchback of £8,995, and £9,995 for the GLX grade. Automatic GLX models are also currently on offer at £10,863 OTR.

Improvements across the rest of the range

As well as the standardisation of ABS & EBD, radio/CD players and airbags throughout the range, Suzuki has made a number of other, model-specific changes.

Suzuki’s 1.1 litre Alto, the car that has provided millions throughout the world with practical, low cost, common sense motoring continues to be on special offer at £5,495 On The Road, despite enjoying the addition of a radio/CD player, and ABS and EBD. What’s more, it also gains rear head restraints, new seats and new interior trim for 2004. With a combined fuel consumption of 57.6 mpg, the Alto represents low budget motoring at its best.

In Suzuki’s 4x4 range, the Jimny Estate Mode special edition becomes a standard model, while the Jimny Soft Top specification now includes a leather covered steering wheel and gear knob, silver dials and two tone cloth upholstery.

The Grand Vitara 1.6 16V 3-door SE Estate now features air conditioning, with the manual model priced at £12,795 and the automatic at £13,745 On The Road (ie no increase). The 2.0 litre Direct Injection Turbo Diesel 3 door SE model becomes even more attractive value as a result of a 5 per cent price cut from £14,733 to £13,995 On The Road.

And all 5-door Grand Vitara models now have electrically adjustable, heated door mirrors in addition to their already extensive standard specifications.

These changes across the Suzuki range come on top of the improvements to the Wagon R+ announced in January and the introduction of the all-new Ignis 5-door and Ignis Sport last year. New front end styling, a new 1.3 litre VVT-i engine, ABS with EBD and new interior trim, ensure that the Wagon R+ provides excellent performance, safety and unrivalled interior space for five adults and their luggage.

The all-new 5-door Ignis range launched last September combines the comfort of a passenger car with the practicality of an SUV to create a stylish, spacious and particularly distinctive proposition in the supermini sector, with the choice of two or four-wheel drive.

The Ignis Sport, launched one month later and powered by a 1.5 litre VVT engine, is engineered to provide exhilarating performance at a realistic and particularly competitive introductory offer price of £8,995. It boasts air conditioning, Recaro seats, alloy wheels, a specially designed sports exhaust system, a close ratio 5-speed manual gearbox and sports tuned suspension.
